I had a very interesting discussion with one of my clients the other day, as we pondered gathering data about supplier performance. The client was adamant that there was no need to capture data, just 'deal with the issue then and there' whereas I supported the 'take action there and then' argument but have a fundamental belief in the need to gather data to facilitate the longer term review of performance and to assist with the identification of trends - for instance 'the supplier always used to deliver on time but over the last 6 months their perofmance has really dropped off'. This trend analysis can enable much more meaningful debate and discussion with the supplier and enable the two parties to work together to resolve longer term issues and to take effective corrective and preventive action to remove the problems once and for all.
